Short video showing the PNVS, mostly complete, some level balancing to do which will wait till testing.

*Edit*
Tinkering with the PNVS/HMD mask today to fit symbology and again one of those quirky realism vs. expectation problems became apparent.
Looking down the HMD egg with video on, the video underlay appears as a slightly ill-fitting rectangle within the near circular lens.
To borrow a crude diagram...
Which looks like a family slide-show thus...
This looks odd without graphics for a surrounding combiner lens frame which is something I'm resisting. A recent AAA console game had this which might look cool but blocks visibility. A more rounded image is better on my eyes (see below). I really prefer my original one though.
Amazing!
ReplyDeleteAMAZING!:D what is that red colour, and why is red, and not as gray as everything?Wow 5 times I watched this movie.
ReplyDeleteAlready it looks better than the apache air assault, wonderful.
If someone told me that came from a real Apache, I would believe them 100%. Great work!
ReplyDeleteTo answer the question about the red colour, it's light from your other virtual eye. The red lighting is coming from the tents at the stagefield below. The PNVS is transparent so any strong lighting or daylight is still visible through it.
ReplyDeleteMaterials for the vegetation need to push data into the heat buffer so they look quite dark.
geez flex... that is pretty god damn amazing my friend. THat looks real.... ummm lets see, the rain effect I THOUGHT was from a real bird and this, if i didnt know any better, would think is real too.
ReplyDeleteYou are knocking everyone's socks off! congratulations on a "real" (or maybe it should be a virtual) triumph.
Jeff
:)
ReplyDeleteYou know what I think? Most people
ReplyDeletewill accelerate the time to play at night.
If you add to the flashes, explosions light effects,PNVS it will be just an unbelievable experience. This video makes shiver everybody simulators fans;)
I wrote a long time ago, and write again-you make the best simulator which was created in the 21st century.Amen.
Really ***** beautiful!
ReplyDeleteNevermind the US Army, the night is now firmly owned by Combat-Helo.
ReplyDeleteCheers
Unfortunately word has it the PNVS system will only work during the hours of 1800 - 2100hrs Monday Thru Friday and will not be available for public use with the Mission Editor.
ReplyDeleteCyclic provoke again, and again will apologize ;))
ReplyDeleteAnd seriously PNVS will be alone DLC for $ 10, a night second DLC for 15 , so I heard.
Great job on PNVS!!! Whats the next step?
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I am not sure here that the symbology at the edges of the FLIR image. Didn't do nights yet but I'd assume that FLIR image would be stretched so that ACQ and TQ values whatnot would have video overlay.
ReplyDeleteNext step? As regards the PNVS just the balancing of the various luminance levels and applying any missing heat maps which will happen over time.
ReplyDeleteNext, changes to the flight model test-bed which is a separate mini-project. Then it's finishing the rockets and IHADSS symbology, should be a real blast.
After that comes the mission computer and trigger/event system to set up range runs and training missions. By which time I hope the new improved flight dynamics will be ready to roll out and small scale alpha testing begins.
@Bushmaster there's gameplay/PC Video issues relating to how big to make various elements. The symbology has a scale factor which can make it fit, but because I like to be able to read and see what things look like at 1:1 scale I have it setup as you see.
ReplyDeleteTo make the video fit over the symbology you loose more of the cockpit. I can't resolve this so the scale settings will be left as an exercise to the user to find a balance between size and comfort.
flex...Im sorry ... U mean you can change the size of the IHADSS symbols and PNVS and video system? if so thats a great amount of customization ofr us.
ReplyDelete@jeff
ReplyDeleteYes you can set the scale factor of each as well as the colour.
wow thats very slick.... how long have you been code wrangling there flex? that kind of programming is pretty high end.

ReplyDeleteThat's pretty sweet. I guess we better get this thing finished for the lads in Poland.
ReplyDeleteFlawless...
ReplyDeleteYour thoughts on the crude diagram is correct, it exactly looks like that but the size is smaller and the symbology sits at the edge. It sometimes get obscured by your head movements. I'd go with the first image right under the diagram, but would also bring the symbology closer to the edges, trust me :) That image is correct but you didn't snip the corners enough like you are showing on the diagram. If you bring the corners in, it would look more roundish, with the image being rectangular ...
ReplyDeleteThe reason Bushmaster is suggesting that the image is not quite right is because in your pictures the video underlay is effectively wide screen and the symbology is square. The aircraft operator previously had the ability to stretch the symbology to fit the HDU combiner lens, the new IHADS21 does it automatically.
ReplyDeleteWhen you look at it, you really don't notice that the image is clipped, it is so close to you eye, it looks square, and remember, it is slightly biased to the right, not in the centre as per your pictures
That must be a new British thing. We are still adjusting the picture on the DAP, manually. Having that automatically done sounds awesome. What Rich can do is to bring the PNVS imagery closer to us making symbology a little bigger. It's hard to describe.
ReplyDeleteHmmm, it might make the symbology a little fuzzy as it will have to bleed pixels during the stretching.
ReplyDeleteIt's possible to adjust the relative size of the video and symbology in code easily. But I think I'll add a 'bias' in the config too so every can mix it up. Would that be acceptable?
And cheers for the feedback. Always welcome.

ReplyDeleteOne thing I am sure is common between Boeing and Westlands models is that because the symbology uses the same combiner lens as the video from the PNVS, the image you should see would be clipped after symbology. I mean that the video would encompass the symbology. I notice on your video, (not pictures however) that some symbology has no video image behind it due to the cropping of the video image.
ReplyDeleteI think we already addressed that, but I am not sure what the outcome is...
