So I'm faced with having to re-factor (meaning to changing code but same behaviour) core sensor code. It's the sort of thing that is utterly frustrating and makes one want to throw everything out of the window. It's not as if there aren't enough things to do.
There's 4 major issues I'm not happy with:
- Flight Model bridge refinement
- Ground dynamics
- Horizon gapping and other asset problems (licences/legal, audio)
- Events / Triggers
I know I can rush some of these things and end up with something I'm not happy with. And if I'm not happy with it I don't see why anyone else will be happy. The majority of potential customers don't follow this blog, they don't care about how much work or team sizes, finds and lack-of, how or why, and often they don't care about the word "beta". To do what's right in the long term means having to not cut corners and do what needs to be done.
Sucks though.
Who would have thought building a stand-alone study sim of the most advanced attach helicopter on the planet would be so difficult? What gives?
dunno about others, but i've been looking forward to a jane's longbow replacement & to your work so pretty please hang in there!
ReplyDeletecheers.
It is true that consumers are not worried about the beta. In my point view i would buy the beta truly that bugs would be agreed on later updates by the developers.
ReplyDeleteI am a potential customer and every day I see this blog but do not really comment.
Taking advantage, I already asked you once had help from a real pilot to develop the physics of helicopter flight?
Once again great work and I hope you guys do not give up the launch
Regards
Jether
Flex I wont insult you by imagining the challenges you and AD have faced but this blog has given me a small window into your world and earned my respect for what you are trying to achieve and I concur with uniformguard "please hang in there"

Saludos.
ReplyDeleteKeep it up Flexman! We're silently following the dev blog! We care a lot about it!
ReplyDeleteId like to see EA make what you're making flex... their brains would melt within a week.
ReplyDeleteI can understand the frustration you have with an update that causes issues... makes you deathly afraid of doing it again... especially if the changes are "just sorta missed" by the code monkeys.
Looks like you picked a bad week to stop sniffing glue!
The only legal issues we have with assets are those industrial buildings (which were apparently stolen). They'll be dumped once I get back to my work station. I'll put together some better art work to replace them. No more buying assets from these semi-legal websites is the answer to that puzzle.
ReplyDeleteCheers
Audio is a big problem. Some sounds are pretty decent and some are plain crap (30MM). It's an area where we have practically no expertise at all. I wonder if meatwater is still around?
ReplyDeleteCheers
glad to hear your family is OK Dave. I hope you get back to your home soon.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jeff! I'll be attemptimg to drive home this weekend. Hopefully this attempt will be more successful than the last attempt.
ReplyDeleteso the floods are just low level, I guess, sort of "wash outs"?
ReplyDeleteare they due to heavy rains or rising lake levels?
The floods in some parts of the country were/are upto 2M's. Central Bangkok has been spared but there's a ring around the city that has been hit almost as bad as up country. My house sits on the inside edge of that ring and although the roads around it all flooded, it's slightly raised and thankfully didn't flood.
ReplyDeleteThe root cause was apparently piss-poor management of the dams. They stored huge quantities of water late in to the season so that they wouldn't be short in the dry season. The water had to be released rather than risk total dam failure.
There's a faint smell of fish outside but I'm happy to be back in a dry home. :)
Cheers
Keep it up guys! I'm silently following this blog since mid of 2010 and would even be interested in buying a beta in case you decide to release something earlier to be able to continue development.
ReplyDeleteWell thats good news. might as well just burn down your house if it floods.
ReplyDeleteHang on guys! I'm also following your blog for quite a while and I think its amazing what you have done so far. For years I've been waiting for a sim to follow LB2 and I'm looking forward.
ReplyDeleteCheers
Just to give you some words of support. There are a lot of people following and waiting for this I am sure. Don't be frustrated is all part of the process. Just take your time and don't rush it.
ReplyDeleteCheers from Portugal!
Keep the work up, just came across this project/sim and I am impressed, do not give up. I wanna get my hands on this when ever I can and then help in finding any issues.
ReplyDeleteKeep it up!
Shhhh... dont disturb the coder while he's in mid-untangling-the-new-updated-software-phase (similar to the warm-liquid-goo-phase).
ReplyDeleteI hope there are people near him in case he has a brain aneurysm or spontaneously combusts or something.
Any heads-up for us? I wanted to wait at least a month before asking that....oh well.... ;-)
ReplyDeleteI'm curious what do you mean by "study sim"?
ReplyDeleteTake your time, we simmers are used to wait for the good stuff! :) Looking very good so far what you have done! :) Can´t wait to get my hands on this sim!
